Basic Diver

The Basic Diver programme is the natural step up from a baptism dive and the first certification Merak Diving issues under the SSI system. It covers two boat dives and a short theory session — enough to earn an entry-level SSI card and reach 12 m with a professional. The first water session is structured like a baptism dive: shallow, controlled, focused on equipment and basic skills. The second session goes deeper, to the 12 m limit, and introduces a broader range of diving techniques. Both take place from the boat, most likely at the protected sites near Mahón that the instructors use for all introductory work — sand bottom, calm conditions, manageable fauna. At 160€ for the full programme, it sits between a one-off baptism and a full Open Water course in both price and commitment. Minimum age is 8. No equipment to bring — towel and swimwear are sufficient.

BAUTIZO

The baptism dive at Merak Diving is a single boat dive to a maximum of 6 m, always supervised one-on-one by a qualified instructor. The typical site for these introductory dives is La Mola or La Mola Nord, both just minutes from the Mahón base — protected sandy-bottom sites with stingrays and the occasional octopus, calm enough to focus entirely on getting comfortable with the equipment. The session covers basic gear familiarisation and the first principles of buoyancy, all in shallow water where the instructor maintains direct control throughout. No prior experience is required and no theory exam is involved. It's a single-session activity, not a course with homework or follow-up. Minimum age is 8 years. The price is 95€ and includes the boat, equipment and instructor supervision. If you want to continue after the baptism, the Basic Diver programme picks up from this point and adds a second dive to 12 m plus a short theory component.

Tour Snorkel

The snorkel tour at Merak Diving is a guided boat excursion to surface sites of interest, priced at 40€. It runs from the boat to points selected for their underwater visibility and marine life, making it a genuine activity rather than a beach-level paddle. The tour is described as ideal for groups and families, and the minimum age of 6 is the lowest of any activity Merak offers. No diving qualification or swimming test is mentioned as a requirement. Boat departure times align with the standard dive slots — 9:00, 11:30 and 16:00. For non-diving companions joining a dive trip, this is the natural parallel activity. The sites around Menorca's southern marine reserve and Fornells bay offer enough surface-level interest — clear water, rock formations, fish — to make a guided snorkel tour worthwhile rather than just a backup option.

Scuba Diver

The SSI Scuba Diver course at Merak Diving is the intermediate step between Basic Diver and a full Open Water certification. It qualifies you to dive to 12 m with a dive professional and forms the first half of the Open Water programme, so credits carry forward if you decide to continue. Merak Diving runs all its SSI courses from its Mahón base, with theory available online through the SSI e-learning platform. Pool or confined water sessions and open water dives take place at the protected sites near Mahón used for all beginner training — shallow, sandy-bottom locations with reliable conditions. The course is priced at 300€. Because Merak also holds ITC instructor training status, the teaching staff here tends to come from a more rigorous professional background than a typical resort dive shop. SSI affiliation is required; if you're not already registered with SSI, the centre can set that up on enrolment.

Open Water

The SSI Open Water Diver course at Merak Diving certifies you to dive independently to 18 m worldwide. It's the standard entry-level certification and the most complete first course the centre offers at 495€. Theory is delivered via the SSI e-learning system — you can start before arriving in Menorca and come to the centre ready for water sessions. Confined water training and open water dives take place from the boat at Merak's regular Mahón sites. The shallow, protected waters near Mahón are well-suited to open water training: calm, clear, with enough marine life to make the dives interesting without the current or depth that characterises the reserve sites around Isla del Aire. Menorca's waters are notably clear, which makes the underwater navigation and buoyancy exercises easier to execute and review. The centre requires a valid dive medical and insurance before any in-water training begins — both can be arranged locally if needed. Once certified, you'll be eligible to join the daily guided dives to all the intermediate-level sites in both the Mahón and Fornells programme.

Advanced OW Diver

The SSI Advanced Open Water Diver course at Merak Diving extends your certification to 30 m and broadens the range of sites and conditions you can handle. At 410€, it's a logical next step after Open Water if you want to access the deeper parts of the Merak programme. The course involves a set of adventure dives that introduce specific skills — typically including deep diving and underwater navigation as core components. On the Merak site list, completing this course opens up places like the Junker 88 and Santa Clara wrecks, which sit at 40–46 m (those require further qualification), and intermediate sites in the 20–28 m range like Llosa dels Ocellers under the Cavalleria lighthouse and the deeper parts of the Fornells reserve. The Menorca setting works well for an advanced course: the variety of dive profiles — walls, caverns, seamounts, wrecks — means each adventure dive can be done at a genuinely interesting site rather than a training flat. Confined water sessions if required take place at the centre's usual beginner sites near Mahón.

Esp. Flotabilidad, nocturna, navegación y traje seco

Four SSI specialties grouped at 210€: buoyancy, night diving, navigation and dry suit. Each covers a specific skill area within the SSI system and adds a specialty credit toward higher rating programmes. Night diving in Menorca has a specific site attached to it: Cal Dimoni near Cala Rafalet, where the rock formations and light play are described on the site as spectacular after dark. That gives the night specialty module a concrete destination rather than a generic training exercise. Navigation and buoyancy work can be done across the range of Mahón sites depending on conditions. Dry suit instruction is relevant for divers planning to extend their season or travel to colder water destinations. Merak Diving's position as an ITC-level SSI centre means the instructors running these specialties have formal teaching credentials beyond the recreational minimum.

Esp. Nitrox e Identificación Peces (sin inmersión)

Two SSI specialties combined at 145€: nitrox and fish identification. A version without the in-water component (theory and certification only) is available at 100€. Nitrox certification is practical at Merak: the centre offers nitrox fills on site. Having the card means you can request enriched air on any of the guided dives, which is useful on the multiple-dive days given the range of 15–22 m sites in both the Mahón and Fornells programmes. Fish ID is well-suited to Menorca's waters — the site descriptions reference moray eels, grouper, barracuda schools, scorpionfish, nudibranchs, stingrays, octopus, corvina and abalone, among others. The no-dive version of the combined course (100€) covers the theory and certification side only, which works if you're combining it with a trip where the diving is already planned.

Esp. Ciencia del buceo (Teoría)

The SSI Dive Science specialty at Merak Diving is a theory-only programme priced at 230€. No in-water sessions are required — the course focuses entirely on the academic side of diving: physics, physiology, decompression theory, equipment science and the aquatic environment. Merak Diving has run this course online and has produced instructor-led video content to supplement the SSI materials. The course is available to SSI divers affiliated with the centre, and the centre can handle new SSI registration on enrolment if needed. For divers looking to deepen their technical understanding without adding more dives to their log, or for those preparing for instructor training, this specialty fills the knowledge gaps that practical diving courses tend to skip over. It counts as an SSI specialty credit within the system's progression pathway.

Esp Stress & Rescue + React Right

The SSI Stress and Rescue plus React Right combination at Merak Diving costs 420€ and is the most safety-focused course in the centre's specialty catalogue. It trains divers to recognise and manage stress in themselves and other divers, and to respond effectively to diving emergencies. The React Right component covers emergency oxygen administration and basic first aid specific to diving accidents — a practical addition given that Merak Diving is a DAN Partner and the nearest hyperbaric facilities in Menorca are a drive away. The Stress and Rescue course involves both in-water rescue scenarios and surface management techniques. This combination is a prerequisite or co-requisite for Divemaster training in most SSI pathways, so it sits at the boundary between recreational and professional development in the curriculum. The centre's ITC status means the instructors running this course are accreditated to the highest SSI teaching level.

Especialidad Profunda y Descompresión

The SSI Deep and Decompression specialty at Merak Diving costs 300€ and covers diving beyond the standard recreational limits, including decompression stop procedures. This is the logical prerequisite for the deeper wrecks in the Merak programme. The Junker 88 at 46 m and the Santa Clara at the same depth are both listed as expert-only sites. The Malakoff wreck sits at 35–38 m. Having a deep specialty and decompression certification changes which sites you can access on the Merak boat. Menorca's generally good visibility — repeatedly highlighted across the site's dive descriptions — makes deep dives here more manageable in terms of orientation and navigation. The course includes both theory and in-water training. A valid Advanced Open Water certification (or SSI equivalent) is the typical prerequisite for deep specialty training. Merak Diving's ITC status means the instructor delivering this course has advanced teaching credentials.

Preguntas frecuentes

Las dudas más habituales de quienes están a punto de reservar

Certified divers and anyone taking a course need a valid dive medical. It's not required for introductory activities like the baptism dive. If you arrive in Menorca without one, Merak Diving points to two local hyperbaric medicine centres: MenorcaSub in Mahón (tel. 656 781 430) and Doctor M. Ribón in Son Bou (tel. 666 117 064).

Yes. Merak Diving is a DAN Partner and can issue insurance on the spot — one day, two days, weekly, monthly or annual. Having valid insurance is mandatory to dive with them.

Three daily departures: 9:00, 11:30 and 16:00. Both Mahón and Fornells bases run boats. It's possible to do two dives in a day across different slots.

Almost always from the boat. The one regular exception is Queso Suizo near Arenal d'es Castell, where the access from shore is easy enough. Shore entry also happens occasionally when bad weather restricts options to a sheltered cala.

Cancel with more than 24 hours notice and you get a full refund. Less than 24 hours and the booking is forfeited. If the centre cancels due to weather, you get priority rebooking or a full refund. Rescheduling is subject to availability and also requires 24 hours notice.

Yes, up to two non-divers per booking, subject to available space on the boat.

Just a towel and swimwear. The centre provides all the diving equipment needed.

The baptism dive and Basic Diver programme are open from age 8. The snorkel tour is open from age 6.
