Niveau 1 FFESSM

The Niveau 1 brevet is the entry-level CMAS/FFESSM qualification — the first real licence to dive in open water with a guide. At Aqua Sports Plongée, the N1 programme is overseen by Sébastien MARTIN (N4, Initiateur E2), with pool sessions at Piscine Belle Isle on Thursdays and theory classes scheduled separately in the club's calendar. The training follows the FFESSM federal curriculum recognised in over 80 countries.

Pool work at Belle Isle covers the foundational skills: equipment management, buoyancy, mask clearing, emergency procedures, and the physical confidence that takes time to build in a controlled environment. The club runs both collective and individual training formats, which allows instructors to adapt to the pace of each candidate rather than pushing everyone through the same timeline.

Open-water validation dives happen at sites the club uses regularly, including the Gravière du Fort quarry and the fosse d'Ecrouves in the Meurthe-et-Moselle (54). The Ecrouves pit starts at 6m, which is appropriate for first open-water contact. The conditions — cold water, inland quarry visibility — mean candidates arrive at their brevets having worked in real rather than ideal conditions.

The N1 here is a club certification through FFESSM, not a commercial course bought off a price list. Candidates join as licensed members and train alongside the rest of the club. The theoretical component runs in the club's premises with downloadable course materials available through the club's website.
