Open Water Diver

The SSI Open Water Diver is the standard entry-level certification — the one that opens up independent recreational diving worldwide. At Tarraco, the course is structured in three clear sections: four theory sessions, four confined water (pool) sessions, and four open-water dives.

The pool phase is where the foundational skills get locked in before moving to open water. For most people it's the part that matters most — building muscle memory with the regulator, mask, and buoyancy control in a controlled environment before you're working against current or dealing with reduced visibility.

Open-water sessions take place on the Tarragona coast, which the center describes as having rich marine life and good visibility across much of the year. The specific sites aren't named on the website, but the center operates from the marina at Port Esportiu, which puts the dive sites within straightforward reach.

SSI's Open Water Diver certification is among the most widely recognized in recreational diving. Small group sizes mean the instructor has real time with each student, which tends to show in how confident people feel by the final dive.
