Baptêmes de plongée

The lake baptême at Cazaux is the entry point for anyone who wants their first breath underwater without the variables of open sea. The lac de Cazaux sits inland from Arcachon and provides flat, clear water with no tidal movement — the kind of environment where a first-timer can focus entirely on the sensation of breathing underwater rather than on conditions. The session runs about three hours from arrival to departure. It follows the standard baptême structure: a briefing, kit fitting, the immersion itself, and a debrief with information on further training options. The dive is conducted one-on-one with a state-certified instructor (moniteur d'État), and all equipment is provided. At the Cazaux base there are showers, changing rooms, and a social space. Fins, mask, and snorkel are included for accompanying guests who want to stay near the surface and watch. There's no requirement for swimming ability and no medical certificate needed, though the centre asks participants to disclose any relevant health conditions beforehand. Minimum age is 8 years. Minors need a signed parental authorisation. A gift voucher version is available valid for 12 months; if unused, it can be extended one additional year for 35 €.

Double baptême

The double baptême is a full day on the water covering two separate dive sites in the basin. The first immersion is near the tip of the Cap Ferret headland; the second is at the foot of the Dune du Pilat. Between dives there's a stop for lunch (not included) at the foot of the dune or near the Banc d'Arguin sandbank. The route also takes in the Blockhaus Les Sablonneys site, so participants get to see a variety of environments across the basin in a single day. The boat crosses most of the basin both ways, which amounts to a proper tour of the area beyond just the dives themselves. All equipment is provided for both immersions, each conducted with a state-certified instructor. The ratio is one instructor per participant for the actual dives. This option is structured as a gift voucher product and is valid for 12 months from purchase. Accompanying guests pay 35 € to join the boat outing and use the PMT kit (fins, mask, snorkel) around the boat during the dives. Lunch is not provided but there is time built into the schedule to eat on site.

ADVANCED ADVENTURE

The SSI Advanced Adventure Diver course is built around five dive specialties selected by the student, with deep diving included as a mandatory component. At L'Océana VSM, this means working across the centre's named dive sites in the Atlantic — wrecks, the Tombant Hortense wall at 28 m, and the deeper options available in the basin. Once all five specialties are logged, the Advanced Adventure Diver certification is issued. The centre handles the full training and dive cycle in-house. Individual specialties can also be pursued separately to complement an existing certification. Minimum age is 10, and an Open Water Diver certification (SSI, PADI, FFESSM Niveau 1, or equivalent) is required. The course is designed for certified divers who want to expand their range of environments and techniques. All equipment is available for rental during the course. A medical certificate is required. The centre's involvement with GRAMASA means that the blockhaus PADI specialty — covering the historical bunker sites specific to the Arcachon area — can also be integrated into a broader training programme here.

OPEN WATER

The SSI Open Water Diver is the first full independent certification, authorising dives to 18 m without a professional guide. L'Océana VSM runs the practical training from the lac de Cazaux before moving to sea dives in the Bassin d'Arcachon, giving students both the controlled conditions of freshwater training and exposure to tidal open-water environments. The certification is globally recognised. Once obtained, graduates can dive independently with another certified diver anywhere in the world. The centre manages the full training cycle: theory, pool or lake sessions, and open-water dives, through to the SSI exam. Minimum age is 10. A medical certificate is mandatory and must be produced on the first day of the course. All equipment is provided during training sessions. The centre's instructors hold the French state diploma (moniteur d'État). For those who want the FFESSM or ANMP route instead of SSI, the centre also delivers those certifications — both of which carry automatic CMAS equivalence for international recognition. The choice between systems can be discussed directly with the team.

SCUBA DIVER

The SSI Scuba Diver is the shorter path to a first open-water certification — less classroom time than the full Open Water, and a depth limit of 12 m, always accompanied by a professional instructor. At L'Océana VSM, the practical sessions run from the lac de Cazaux, which keeps conditions manageable while still providing a real open-water environment. The centre handles the full course package: training, dives, and the certification exam. The SSI certification fees are 75 € and include a lifetime digital certification, a lifetime digital training kit, and a lifetime digital logbook — all handled through the SSI platform. Minimum age is 10. No prior experience is required. The Scuba Diver level is internationally recognised and can be upgraded to the full Open Water Diver certification later by completing the remaining requirements. All equipment is provided during the course. A medical certificate is required and must be presented on the first day of training. The centre's instructors hold the French state diploma (moniteur d'État) and are accredited by SSI.

Stress and Rescue SSI

The SSI Stress and Rescue programme focuses on recognising and managing stress in diving — both in yourself and in other divers — and on the practical responses to in-water accidents. At L'Océana VSM, the instructors draw on students' own logged experience to run scenario-based sessions, which is where the programme is most effective. The course covers stress identification, preventive action, and active rescue techniques for both surface and underwater situations. It's aimed at divers who already have autonomous experience and want to be a more capable dive partner. Prerequisites are strict: minimum age 15, an Open Water Diver certification or equivalent, a React Right specialty (or equivalent first aid) dated within the last two years, and an autonomous diving certification to 50 m. A medical certificate is required. This course is recognised internationally within the SSI system and pairs logically with further SSI professional-track training. The centre can advise on progression routes depending on the student's objectives.

Formation Étanche (Drysuit)

L'Océana VSM runs drysuit training through the winter months, taking advantage of the colder Atlantic water to give the course practical relevance. The Arcachon basin in winter is a genuine drysuit environment, so students are learning in conditions where the equipment actually makes a difference. The course covers drysuit buoyancy management, inflation and deflation techniques, and the additional considerations for under-suit layering. The centre has been offering this training since at least 2018 based on published content, and the winter scheduling is a deliberate choice to align theory with conditions. The centre can organise bespoke group stages — contact them directly to arrange dates and group size. Individual sessions can also be scheduled on request. Equipment used during training is available for rental from the centre's stock. For divers considering a drysuit purchase, the shop team can advise on the choice between trilaminate and compressed neoprene suits — a question that comes up often given the range of diving conditions in the area.

Frequently asked

What people ask before booking

Yes — departures are scheduled around the tides, so the boat leaves when conditions allow, not on a fixed clock. If you're late, you may miss the window entirely. Confirm your slot in advance and plan to be at the quai du Capitaine Allègre a few minutes early.

For baptêmes (discover dives), no medical certificate is needed, but you should arrive in good physical condition and complete a health questionnaire. For all training courses, a medical certificate is mandatory from day one — a sports medicine doctor is best placed to issue it.

All equipment is provided for baptêmes and training courses. For exploration dives, wetsuit, BCD, cylinders, and regulators are available to rent; fins, mask, and weights are provided free of charge. All gear is serviced regularly on site.

Most training, including beginner-level courses, is run from the centre's base at the lac de Cazaux — a freshwater lake with calmer, more controlled conditions. Explorations and baptêmes on the basin depart from the Arcachon marina at 14 quai du Capitaine Allègre.

Baptêmes are open from age 8. Minors need a signed parental authorisation. SSI courses (Open Water, Scuba Diver, Advanced Adventure) start from age 10; Stress and Rescue requires age 15 and an Open Water certification or equivalent.

Yes, if you cancel more than four days before the scheduled activity, you receive a full refund. Within four days of the date, 20% of the total price is retained. Gift vouchers not used within 12 months can be extended for one additional year for a fee of 35 €.

Yes, Nitrox is available year-round up to 40%, alongside standard air fills. The compressor station has eight 50-litre buffer tanks at 280 bar, filling cylinders to 230 bar. Base pricing for Nitrox is set for 12-litre cylinders; 15-litre cylinders are priced differently.

The centre is a partner of GRAMASA, an organisation focused on the historical study of the Atlantic Wall bunkers on the seabed around Arcachon. This partnership has led to a validated PADI specialty specifically covering these blockhaus dive sites — an unusual and locally specific certification not available elsewhere.
