The baptême at URSRSA takes place in the Piscine Garibaldi during the club's Wednesday evening sessions, or on dedicated baptême evenings organised at the start of the season. It is the entry point for anyone who has never tried scuba — no experience required, no certification needed beforehand. Reservation is mandatory; walk-ins are not accepted for these sessions. The minimum age is 8 years old, and the text states explicitly that anyone can try. The session covers the basics of breathing underwater with a constant air supply, buoyancy awareness and movement in the pool environment — all under direct supervision in the shallow end of the Garibaldi pool. It is a single-session introduction rather than a multi-day course. For those who want to move on to full certification after the baptême, the Niveau 1 course is the logical next step within the URSRSA training ladder. The club holds its baptême evenings in September and October to coincide with the season start, giving new members a low-commitment way to experience the club before signing up for a full course or annual membership. The baptême is conducted in French, consistent with the club's operating language throughout all its training activities under FFESSM.
formation niveau 1
Niveau 1 is the first full FFESSM certification, allowing the holder to dive under supervision down to 20 m. At URSRSA, the training begins in the pool at the Piscine Garibaldi during Wednesday evening sessions, covering the foundational skills before moving to open water for the qualification dives. The sea component typically takes place during one of the club's Mediterranean outings — Marseille, Cassis, Giens or Fréjus — or at the Chamagnieu freshwater site 30 minutes from Lyon. The pool phase builds the core competencies: equipment handling, mask clearing, regulator recovery, buoyancy control and the emergency procedures required by FFESSM standards. The progression to open water lets candidates apply those skills in a real diving environment under the supervision of qualified instructors. The club has the technical director staff (Directeur Technique and Directeur Technique Adjoint) in place to run this training year-round. Because URSRSA operates across pool, lake and Mediterranean environments, Niveau 1 candidates get exposure to different types of water before certification — a practical advantage over clubs that only run Mediterranean trips for their open-water phase. The Chamagnieu site in particular gives candidates a chance to log supervised dives in calm natural water close to Lyon without waiting for a weekend Mediterranean trip. All instruction is conducted in French. No prior diving certification is required, though completing a baptême first is a natural way to confirm the activity is a good fit before committing to the full course.
formation niveau 2
Niveau 2 extends the diver's autonomy significantly: it permits diving without a direct supervisor to 20 m, and diving with a palanquée leader to 40 m. At URSRSA, candidates must already hold a Niveau 1 or equivalent certification, and must have logged a minimum of 10 open-water dives before starting the programme — a prerequisite that filters out candidates who have certified but not yet built real water time. Training again runs through the Wednesday pool sessions at Piscine Garibaldi for skill consolidation, with open-water dives at Chamagnieu or during Mediterranean weekends for the qualification components. The FFESSM framework at this level introduces more demanding skills: navigation, dive planning, buoyancy control in variable conditions, and the ability to manage a small group as part of a palanquée. The Mediterranean outings to Marseille, Cassis, Giens and Fréjus serve as the primary sea training ground. The fosse at the Centre Aquatique Les Vagues in Meyzieu provides a useful intermediate environment for practising deeper skills before committing to open-sea dives. URSRSA's access to this facility gives Niveau 2 candidates a controlled deep-water training option that isn't dependent on good weather or a trip to the coast. This is particularly useful for the deeper skill work needed before the sea qualification phase. Instruction is in French. Candidates who have certified Niveau 1 at another FFESSM club can join the Niveau 2 programme; the prerequisite is the certification and the 10 logged dives, not membership from the start.
formation Guide de palanquée - niveau 4
URSRSA prepares candidates for two FFESSM teaching qualifications: the initiateur and the Moniteur Fédéral 1er Degré. These are the certifications that allow holders to teach diving under the FFESSM framework — the initiateur being the entry-level teaching qualification, the Moniteur Fédéral 1er Degré the first full instructor grade. Having both preparation pathways available within a single club is not standard; it places URSRSA among a smaller group of FFESSM-affiliated structures with the qualified staff to run this level of training. The club's 74 years of operation mean that the instructors and technical directors running these programmes have extensive experience with the FFESSM examination requirements at this level. Candidates going through initiateur or moniteur preparation at URSRSA are embedded in an active club environment — teaching real groups of beginners and certification candidates rather than simulating teaching situations. That practical exposure is the most effective preparation for the real exam conditions. Preparation draws on the full range of URSRSA environments: pool sessions at Piscine Garibaldi for controlled teaching practice, Chamagnieu for open-water instruction contexts, the Meyzieu fosse for deeper scenarios, and Mediterranean trips for sea instruction experience. The club's regular baptême evenings and Niveau 1 courses serve as live teaching practice grounds for candidates preparing for teaching qualifications. All preparation is conducted in French. Candidates interested in initiateur or moniteur preparation should contact the club directly to discuss current availability and the prerequisites for entry onto the preparation programme.
