Open Water Diver

The SSI Open Water Diver course at Duikcentrum van de Ven certifies you to dive independently to 18 m and is recognized worldwide. Being an SSI Diamond Center — the top recognition tier — means the training infrastructure and instructor standards are audited regularly. The course is offered in two formats: VIP (fully private, one instructor for your group, ~€415 all in) and Classic (up to four students per instructor, ~€395 all in). Both prices include all required dives. Open water skills are practiced in the sea directly, not a pool. Jan Thiel's southern coast offers protected, calm conditions for the initial training dives, which is a practical advantage when you are learning basic skills like buoyancy, mask clearing, and regulator recovery. The same water you train in is where you will continue diving once certified — so the environment is familiar from day one. The certification dives progress from shallow confined-water skills to open water dives at increasing depth, finishing at the 18 m limit. The SSI system includes digital training materials via the DiveSSI app, and the center provides access to SSI's free online learning platform to complete theory at your own pace before the in-water sessions begin. Reviews specifically name Monique for her work with anxious beginners during Open Water training — step-by-step, patient, unhurried. Multiple students describe entering the course nervous and finishing it confident. That track record across a sustained number of verified reviews suggests a consistent approach rather than occasional good results. Once certified, the center offers upgrade paths to Scuba Diver (if starting from that level) or directly into Advanced Open Water and specialty courses. A referral option exists for students who have completed theory and pool training elsewhere and want to finish their open water dives in Curaçao.

Advanced Open Water

The SSI Advanced Open Water Diver course at Duikcentrum van de Ven builds on an existing Open Water certification through a set of specialty dives. The Classic version runs approximately €358 all in; the VIP private version is around €400. Night dives, if included in the Advanced track, carry a small extra surcharge (~€25 per person). All dives take place at the center's regular sites along Curaçao's southern coast. The specialty modules that appear in the course catalog include Deep Diving, Navigation, Perfect Buoyancy, Photo and Video, Enriched Air Nitrox, Night Diving and Limited Visibility, Wreck Diving, and Full Face Mask Diving. The exact combination for the Advanced course would need to be confirmed with the center at booking, but Curaçao's dive sites make several of these modules particularly well-suited: the Superior Producer wreck is a natural fit for a Wreck Diving specialty, and the reef structures around Caracasbaai and Directeursbaai give good navigation and buoyancy practice. As with the Open Water course, the VIP format means one instructor for your group only throughout the course. The Classic format caps at four students per instructor. Guests combining the Open Water course with a VIP Specialty in a single booking qualify for a promotional package that currently includes a free Mares Rover mask and snorkel (terms apply, booking in advance required). The center's instructors — Gerard holds SSI Master Instructor status — have the qualifications to take students through the full advanced curriculum. The SSI Diamond Center rating applies to specialty instruction as much as to entry-level courses, which means the training record is maintained at the same standard across all levels.

SSI Try Scuba Diving (Introductory Dive)

The introductory dive at Duikcentrum van de Ven runs from their base in Jan Thiel, with two main site options: Tugboat and Caracasbaai. Both are shore dives, no boat involved, which keeps the logistics simple and the experience calmer for first-timers. You walk in from the beach, descend with your instructor, and spend the dive exploring the reef or wreck structure at a pace that suits you. The Classic version puts you in a group of up to four people per instructor and costs around €80 per person. The VIP version — priced at approximately €89 — gives you a private instructor for your group only, which makes a real difference when one person needs more time to equalize or wants to linger over a particular section of reef. For a first dive, the VIP option tends to be worth the small premium. The center has been running these introductory dives since 2009 and the format is well-established. Briefing happens at the school, gear is provided, and the instructor stays with you throughout. No prior experience is needed. A medical declaration is required before diving, and the center's website has the relevant form. Multiple reviews specifically mention how quickly nervous energy dissipates once the briefing starts. The instructors — Angelique, Monique, Gerard, and Johan are the named team members — are described consistently as calm and patient. For guests who have never breathed underwater, that framing matters more than the dive site itself. Add-on: a photo and video reportage package is available during introductory dives (temporarily suspended May 11 – July 2, 2026). Guests bring their own USB stick to receive the original files.
