SSI Open Water Course

The SSI Open Water Diver course at Manta Diving Lanzarote offers a structured pathway to certification, designed for beginners. This program includes six confined water dives conducted in the sheltered, marine-rich waters of Playa Chica bay. Here, you will master essential scuba skills such as clearing your mask, controlling buoyancy, and executing emergency procedures, building a solid foundation of confidence. Following this, you will undertake four open water dives in the ocean, with Manta Diving Lanzarote kindly adding a fifth fun dive at no extra cost. These dives progress in depth, reaching a maximum of 18 meters for divers aged 12 and above (12 meters for younger participants aged 10-11), providing a comprehensive introduction to underwater exploration. The course typically runs from 8:30 AM to 1:00 PM on the first and third days, with an additional afternoon session on the second day, optimizing your learning experience within a three-day timeframe.

Lanzarote's waters offer a pleasant diving environment, with sea temperatures averaging around 20.5°C throughout the year, making it suitable for diving in various months. For instance, the sea temperature in August can reach up to 24.2°C, while even in January, it remains a comfortable 19.5°C. This consistent warmth, combined with generally low rainfall (averaging 2.1 mm in February and 0 mm in September), creates ideal conditions for maximizing in-water training time. The shallow, fish-filled bay of Playa Chica provides a safe and engaging environment for initial skill development, while the open water dives expose students to the diverse marine life typical of the Canary Islands.

Manta Diving Lanzarote, a center certified by SSI, offers this course in multiple languages including German, English, Spanish, French, Italian, and Portuguese, ensuring accessibility for a diverse range of international students. The center utilizes the MySSI app for digital theory, allowing participants to complete academic portions before their arrival, thereby maximizing practical time in Lanzarote. The course package includes digital student materials, a Manta Diving T-shirt, insurance for the duration of the course, full equipment hire, underwater photos to commemorate your achievement, and a digital logbook. A complimentary fun dive is included upon successful completion, and prior SSI Basic Diver recognition can be credited towards this course, potentially offering a discount for further training.

This SSI Open Water Diver certification is designed for individuals aged 10 and above who are in good general health and comfortable in the water. A basic swim test, involving a 10-minute float or tread water and a 200-meter swim or 300-meter snorkel, is required to ensure water competency. The course structure emphasizes progressive skill development, moving from confined water drills to open water experiences, including both shore and boat dives. The use of the center's custom trimaran for some dives adds a unique dimension to the learning experience, providing a well-rounded introduction to various diving scenarios. Upon completion, you will be qualified to dive with a buddy to a maximum depth of 18 meters worldwide.
