The Open Water Diver course at Dutchess Scuba Diving is your essential first step into the world of scuba. Academics can be tackled at your own pace, with the convenience of online learning through SSI. Upon purchasing your course materials at the shop, you'll receive an access code for these online lessons. SSI even provides free introductory modules for snorkeling and freediving, along with the initial chapters of the Open Water course, accessible by creating a diver profile and selecting Dutchess Scuba Diving. This allows for a solid theoretical grounding before you even get wet.

Confined water sessions, often conducted in local pools like those at Bard College, Kingston YMCA, and the Jewish Community Center of Poughkeepsie, are vital for mastering essential scuba skills. These controlled environments allow you to become familiar with your equipment and practice fundamental techniques without the complexities of open water. The open water portion of your certification requires a minimum of four dives. These dives can be completed locally, providing a chance to practice in familiar waters, or through a referral to a partner dive center in a warmer climate of your choosing.
