The minimum age to try diving is 8 years old. For certification, the minimum age is 10 years old for Junior Open Water and standard Open Water certifications.
Open Water dives are typically held at Haigh Quarry, referred to as the 'Caribbean of the Midwest'. The organization believes learning in these conditions makes for better-trained divers.
Certifying students can purchase or rent personal equipment, which includes a mask, snorkel, boots, and fins. A surface marker buoy and a water-resistant timepiece are also required. Dive computers are highly recommended as a first equipment purchase after certification.
The full Open Water certification fee includes the required academics, rental equipment for training (BCD, cylinder, regulator, wetsuit for quarry dives), and all pool sessions, including any extra sessions needed. Quarry entrance fees and University of Chicago pool fees are separate.
