OPEN WATER

The Open Water course at Scubafriends Tenerife is run by PADI-certified instructors in Italian, Spanish, and English, within the framework of a PADI 5 Stars IDC Center authorized by the Gobierno de Canaria. Course Director Salvatore Giglione oversees the program, and the teaching approach here emphasizes quality over volume — the center explicitly states it does not chase high certification numbers. Groups for courses are capped at five or six students, keeping instructor attention real rather than theoretical. Tenerife's Atlantic conditions — clear water, year-round diving, no extreme currents for entry-level sites — make it a practical place to do an Open Water rather than a rushed holiday course. The PADI Open Water certification obtained here is valid globally. Graduates looking to continue immediately can move into the Advanced Open Water track, also offered by the center with packages from €399.

ADVANCED

The Advanced Open Water course at Scubafriends Tenerife runs over two to three days and caps at three students per group — tighter than anything a larger operation would offer. The two mandatory adventure dives are navigation (compass work in open water) and deep beyond 18 meters; the remaining three are chosen from a list that includes wrecks, buoyancy improvement, night diving, search and recovery, drysuit, fish identification, and drift diving. No written exam at the end. Minimum age is 12, and the entry requirement is an existing Open Water or equivalent certification from any agency. Dive insurance is required; DAN Europe coverage can be arranged at the center. Three package tiers are available. The Bronze at €399 covers the e-learning manual, five adventure dives, full equipment rental including dive computer, transport to dive sites in the center's van, water and snacks, and the AOWD certification. The Silver at €440 adds photos and video, a Dive Against Debris certification, and DAN Europe insurance. The Gold at €659 extends to six dives with one in Nitrox, adds Nitrox and DSMB specialty certifications on top of the AOWD, photos, video, and DAN insurance. For anyone who wants to reach 30 meters but cannot fit five dives into the schedule, the center also offers the PADI Adventure Diver track requiring only three dives — worth asking about when booking. Instruction is in Italian, Spanish, or English depending on the student. The dive sites used are off Costa Adeje, reached by the center's van and chosen based on conditions on the day.

Corso PADI Divemaster

The PADI IDC at Scubafriends Tenerife is run by Course Director Salvatore Giglione, who is also the center owner — meaning candidates work directly with the person responsible for the program rather than being handed to a staff instructor. Salvatore holds over 5,000 logged dives with Trimix 66 and Tec 50 ratings alongside his Course Director credential. The center is limited-enrollment with groups of up to six candidates. The course fee is €850 for the core IDC plus €350 for the EFR Instructor add-on. Teaching materials are purchased separately at €990 for the 2026 digital crew pack (including cue cards, eRDPml, and the EFR digital instructor pack). PADI's mandatory fees add further costs: €230 for the instructor application, €833 for the IE exam, €151.50 for the EFR instructor rating, and €59 per specialty. Five specialty instructor ratings can be bundled at €1,000 total from a list including Deep, Nitrox, Drysuit, Wreck, Night Diver, Search and Recovery, DPV, Oxygen Provider, Compressor Operator, Boat Diver, and Digital Underwater Photography. Four IDC cycles are scheduled in 2026: January 30–February 5 (IE February 7–8), May 1–7 (IE May 9–10), September 18–25 (IE September 26–27), and November 27–December 4 (IE December 4–5). Specialty instructor and Master Scuba Diver Trainer courses run in the two days immediately following each IE. Because Salvatore is the Course Director and owner, scheduling outside the fixed calendar is available on request. The facility has a dedicated classroom, warm showers, and changing rooms 50 meters from the sea. The course is available in Italian, Spanish, and English. Candidates must bring their own dive equipment (the center provides tanks and weights), all PADI materials in current editions, and a valid medical certificate.

Corsi di apnea a Tenerife

The PADI Nitrox specialty at Scubafriends Tenerife teaches divers to plan and execute dives using enriched air, extending bottom time within no-decompression limits. The center provides Nitrox fills on site, so the certification can be put to immediate use on guided dives or subsequent course dives. The specialty also feeds into the Advanced Open Water Gold package — one of the six adventure dives in that package is conducted on Nitrox, with the Nitrox certification included in the Gold price of €659. That makes it a practical add-on for divers doing the AOWD who want to get the most from the program. Instruction in Italian, Spanish, or English.

Tec 50

The Tec 40 at Scubafriends Tenerife is the first step out of recreational diving and into the technical track. It is taught within a center whose Course Director holds Tec 50 and Trimix 66 ratings, so the progression beyond Tec 40 can continue within the same operation without switching schools. At this level, students begin working with decompression planning, supplementary cylinders, and the procedures that separate recreational from technical diving. Tenerife's clear Atlantic water and year-round access make it a practical environment for learning skills that will later be applied in more demanding conditions. The Tec 40 is the gateway to Tec 45 and Tec 50, both of which are also offered at Scubafriends Tenerife. Instruction is available in Italian, Spanish, and English.

PADI Rescue Diver

The Rescue Diver course at Scubafriends Tenerife sits at the top of the recreational ladder before the professional track begins. It is the course the center lists as a prerequisite for the Divemaster program, which gives an indication of how seriously the Rescue certification is treated in their curriculum. The course combines theory with practical scenarios — managing tired or panicking divers, surface tows, missing diver searches, and emergency oxygen use. Tenerife's clear Atlantic water makes skills practice straightforward without the visibility limitations that can complicate rescue scenarios elsewhere. An EFR (Emergency First Response) certification in CPR and first aid is required before starting the Rescue course. The center offers EFR training as a standalone program. Instruction is available in Italian, Spanish, and English.

Discover Scuba Diving

The Try Dive at Scubafriends Tenerife is the entry point for anyone who has never put a regulator in their mouth. No certification is required and no prior swimming experience beyond basic comfort in water. The instructors take you through everything from the surface — mask, breathing, buoyancy — before heading down into the Atlantic waters off Costa Adeje. The center runs these in small groups, following the same five-to-six person cap that applies across all their programs. The Atlantic around Tenerife has no coral reef, but the variety of marine life accessible from shore or a short boat ride makes it a legitimate first dive environment rather than a backup option. Instruction is available in Italian, Spanish, and English. This is the step before the Open Water course — a way to confirm the underwater world is for you before committing to certification.

PADI Divemaster

The Divemaster course at Scubafriends Tenerife runs eight to ten days depending on individual availability and is priced at €1,199. Entry requires a Rescue Diver certification, valid CPR and first aid training, a medical certificate, current dive insurance, and a minimum of 45 logged dives at the start — with 60 required to complete the program. Minimum age is 18. The price includes the full student kit: PADI encyclopedia, Divemaster manual, instructor manual, PADI DM cue cards, and all equipment during the course. The program covers dive site mapping, running briefings, supervising student divers, emergency management, and assisting with Discover Scuba and entry-level courses. Scubafriends Tenerife is a PADI 5 Stars IDC Center, which means the Divemaster here is trained in an environment that also runs instructor-level programs — the standards applied are those of a full professional development facility. Salvatore Giglione, the Course Director and center owner, has personally certified dozens of Divemasters who are now working at dive operations internationally. For those who want to continue to the instructor level immediately after completing the DM, the IDC runs four cycles per year in Tenerife with the same Course Director. The transition from DM to IDC candidate within the same center is a practical option the center actively supports.

Corso PADI Sidemount

The Sidemount specialty at Scubafriends Tenerife trains divers to carry two independent cylinders mounted at the sides of the body rather than on the back. The configuration, originally developed for cave diving, is now used by recreational divers for its redundancy, streamlined profile, and reduced back strain. The center's technical background — with a Course Director holding Tec 50 and Trimix ratings — means the Sidemount course here sits within a teaching environment that understands the configuration in its technical context, not just as a recreational variant. For divers considering a path toward cave or technical diving, that context matters. Instruction in Italian, Spanish, or English.

Frequently asked

What people ask before booking

Yes — guided dives are for certified divers only, minimum a first-level certification. You must be at least 10 years old. If you are not certified, the Try Dive (Discover Scuba Diving) program is the alternative. DAN Europe insurance is required and can be arranged at the center if you don't have it.

All guided dives include an instructor-led dive, a 12-liter tank and weights, transport to the dive sites in the center's van, water and a snack after diving, and anti-fog gel for your mask. Equipment rental — including dive computer and signaling buoy, both mandatory — costs €20 per day separately.

Groups for guided dives are capped at five or six divers per guide. Course groups are also capped at five or six, and the PADI Advanced Open Water course runs with a maximum of three students. The IDC is limited-enrollment and conducted in small groups of up to six.

Courses are available in Italian, Spanish, and English. The IDC course in particular is confirmed in all three languages.

Three packages exist. The Bronze at €399 covers the e-learning manual, five adventure dives, full equipment rental, dive computer, transport, water and snacks, and the AOWD certification. The Silver at €440 adds photos and video, a Dive Against Debris certification, and DAN Europe insurance. The Gold at €659 extends to six dives including one in Nitrox, adds Nitrox and DSMB specialties, photos, video, and DAN insurance. Minimum age is 12, no written exam required.

The Divemaster course costs €1,199 and runs eight to ten days. Entry requires a Rescue Diver certification, CPR and first aid training, a valid medical certificate, dive insurance, and at least 45 logged dives — with 60 required by the end of the course. Minimum age is 18. The price includes the student kit, PADI encyclopedia, DM and instructor manuals, cue cards, and all equipment throughout.

Yes. Because Salvatore is both the center owner and the PADI Course Director, it is possible to schedule the IDC at dates that suit you, outside the four fixed 2026 cycles (January–February, May, September, and November–December). Contact the center directly to arrange custom dates.

Yes. Scubafriends manages a holiday apartment in Costa Adeje, listed on Airbnb, with a private terrace, sea view, free Wi-Fi, and a pool that is heated in winter. It is less than ten minutes by car from the diving center.
