Basic Freediver PADI
The Basic Freediver course at ClanDestino Sub is the club's entry point into apnea, taught by Davide Franceschetti who holds a PADI Freedive Instructor qualification. The course focuses on the foundational principles of freediving — breath control, relaxation technique, and the mental approach to static and dynamic apnea — using both dry exercises and in-pool sessions. The target skills are 90 seconds of static apnea and 25 metres of dynamic, both achievable in pool conditions that the club uses for its regular weekly training schedule. No prior freediving or scuba experience is required. Freediving is treated seriously at this club, not as a recreational add-on to the scuba program. In April 2017 ClanDestino Sub hosted Homar Leuci — a world-level competitive freediver with multiple international titles — for a full-day seminar on breathing, relaxation, and in-water practice. That event gives some context for the level of commitment the club brings to the discipline. Students coming into the Basic Freediver course are joining a group that has been actively developing its apnea culture for years. The minimum age for the Basic Freediver is 12 years. Good swimming ability and general physical health are required; no specific fitness level beyond that is mentioned. The theory component uses the PADI Freediver Touch digital materials for self-study, which can be completed independently before pool sessions. Lago di Garda is the natural option for the club's open water freediving work; the lake conditions at Garda are well suited to early open water apnea training. The club's approach to freediving is rooted in the same serious training culture that produced their 2017 seminar with Homar Leuci, a world-ranked competitive freediver who spent a full day with the group working on breath control, mental relaxation, and dynamic apnea in the water. Students joining the Freediver PADI course at this club are benefiting from that background. The training is structured through PADI's Freediver Touch digital materials for the theory component, with in-water sessions building progressively through static, dynamic, and then open water disciplines. Minimum age is 15 years. No prior freediving or scuba experience is required; good swimming ability and physical health are the prerequisites. The course does not require previous Basic Freediver certification, though students who have done the Basic will arrive with useful foundational skills. The Tec Trimix Diver course is the top of ClanDestino Sub's technical diving program, taught by Davide Franceschetti who holds a PADI Trimix Instructor qualification — a rating that is uncommon at a club-level operation anywhere, and particularly so in the inland north of Italy. The course covers planning and executing dives using trimix gas blends, managing multiple cylinders and gas switches, handling extended decompression obligations, and using the redundant equipment configurations required at these depths. Students reaching this level will already have completed the Tec 40, Tec 45, and Tec 50 stages of the PADI TecRec sequence. Prerequisites for the TecRec program generally include being 18 or older, having 100 logged dives, holding PADI Enriched Air Diver and Deep Diver certifications or documented equivalents, and providing medical clearance for technical diving. The progression through Tec 40, Tec 45, and Tec 50 builds the decompression planning, gas management, and equipment redundancy skills that Tec Trimix then extends to deeper exposures and helium-based mixtures. For divers already in the TecRec sequence with ClanDestino Sub, Davide's Trimix Instructor qualification means there's no need to seek out another instructor or travel to a specialist technical centre to complete the certification. That continuity — same instructor, same club, same diving community — is one of the practical advantages of a club that has built its technical program from Tec 40 through to Trimix rather than stopping partway up the stack.
