Open Water Diver

The Open Water Diver at Atlantic Diving Center follows the full PADI curriculum, starting with confined water sessions in the on-site pool at Resort Club Santana on Praia Messias Alves. Having the pool right at the resort means the transition from classroom to water is immediate — no transport, no wasted morning. Once basic skills are solid in the pool, training moves to the sea around São Tomé e Príncipe, where the underwater terrain is volcanic rather than the gentle sand typical of many beginner sites.

São Tomé e Príncipe's position on a secondary volcanic ridge gives the islands an underwater topography of broken relief and varied structure, with water that sits at 28ºC year-round. For a first open water certification, that consistent warm temperature removes one variable — students aren't managing cold on top of everything else a new diver has to process. The endemic marine life here is specific to this part of the Gulf of Guinea, so even the qualifying dives offer a degree of novelty.

Instruction is multilingual, which at a remote destination like São Tomé matters more than it might in a mainstream dive resort. Guests staying at Club Santana pay 440€; the standard rate is 484€. The minimum age is twelve years, and the certification follows PADI standards throughout.
