Offered by SSI Dive Center
Kerpen, North Rhine-Westphalia
Course Description
The SSI Lifeguard - Rettungsschwimmer course at Mermaiding Cologne in Hürth equips participants with professional-level water safety skills. This comprehensive program trains individuals to become certified SSI Pool Lifeguards or Inland Open Water Lifeguards, recognized globally for their two-year validity. The curriculum focuses on emergency recognition, response, and rescue techniques across various aquatic environments. All training is conducted under the direct supervision of an SSI Lifeguard Trainer, ensuring high standards of instruction and practical application.
To enroll, candidates must be at least 16 years old and possess strong swimming abilities. A valid First Aid and CPR certification, no older than two years, is a mandatory prerequisite. Participants must also successfully complete the SSI digital learning materials before commencing practical sessions. The course fee is €159, which covers SSI registration and certification, though it excludes pool admission fees for the required two-day training at the 'De Bütt' facility.
Physical requirements are rigorous, designed to ensure candidates can handle rescue scenarios effectively. These include a 15-meter static apnea, a 50-meter swim with a simulated victim completed in under 60 seconds, and a 400-meter swim in under 9 minutes and 30 seconds. Additionally, participants must demonstrate the ability to tread water for 15 minutes without using their hands. These benchmarks ensure a baseline level of fitness and water confidence necessary for the demanding role of a lifeguard.
Practical training emphasizes hands-on rescue skills, including victim assessment, different rescue methods for various water conditions, and immediate post-rescue care. The goal is to build confidence and competence in managing potential incidents, ensuring the safety of swimmers and patrons. Upon successful completion, graduates are prepared to confidently act as certified lifeguards, a valuable qualification for employment in aquatic facilities worldwide. Courses can be scheduled with short notice upon request, offering flexibility for those eager to gain this professional certification.
