Course Description

The East Coast Divers Assistant Instructor (AI) course is designed for certified Divemasters aiming to advance their professional diving careers. This program focuses on developing the skills necessary to assist Open Water Instructors in teaching diving courses and to independently conduct certain SSI specialty programs. It serves as a vital bridge, preparing candidates for the full Instructor Development Course (IDC) by refining their instructional techniques and leadership abilities. Participants will learn to effectively present academic material, demonstrate skills proficiently in the water, and manage student divers during training sessions.

This course emphasizes the practical application of teaching methodologies under the guidance of experienced SSI Instructor Trainers at East Coast Divers. Candidates will gain hands-on experience in evaluating student performance, providing constructive feedback, and ensuring all training adheres to SSI's rigorous safety standards. The curriculum is structured to build confidence and competence in supervising diving activities and assisting in the training of divers up to the Divemaster level. Upon successful completion, graduates are qualified to teach specific SSI specialty courses and support the delivery of foundational SSI courses, significantly enhancing their diving leadership capabilities.

East Coast Divers offers a supportive environment for aspiring dive professionals. The program allows AI candidates to hone their teaching skills in real-world scenarios, preparing them for the responsibilities of an instructor. This certification is a significant step for those committed to a career in dive education, providing valuable experience and a deeper understanding of instructional techniques. The focus is on practical skill development and the ability to mentor new divers, ensuring they become safe and confident underwater explorers.

As the next logical step after Divemaster, the Assistant Instructor certification equips individuals with the foundational knowledge and practical skills required for higher-level instruction. It unlocks the ability to teach SSI specialty courses, such as Navigation or Equipment, and to assist in the core Open Water Diver certification. This experience is invaluable for anyone aspiring to become a full SSI Instructor, offering a clear pathway to professional growth within the SSI framework and the broader diving community. The skills learned are directly applicable to managing training dives and ensuring student success.
