PADI Scuba Diver
The PADI Scuba Diver course at Big Fish runs over 1–2 days and includes five dives. It certifies divers to go to 12m when accompanied by a PADI professional — it's a partial Open Water qualification, useful for people with limited time who want an internationally recognised card at the end of the holiday rather than just an experience dive. Minimum age is 10 years. The five dives split between confined water skills practice and open water dives at the shallower end of the Big Fish site rotation. Playa Las Vistas at 6–10m is the main open water venue for candidates on this course, keeping depth well within the 12m ceiling. The sandy, predictable terrain here — right in front of the centre at Playa Las Vistas — gives a straightforward setting for buoyancy skills, mask clearing, and regulator recovery without distractions. The 300€ price covers the full five dives, Mares wetsuit and equipment across all sessions, van transfers, study materials in the candidate's language, and dive insurance. Instruction is available in English, German, Spanish, and Polish. The centre's small group format means candidates get direct instructor attention rather than waiting in a queue for skills checks. Scuba Diver certification is a recognised PADI credential, though it limits holders to 12m and requires diving with a professional. Many divers use it as a stepping stone and return to complete the remaining components for a full Open Water Diver certification. At Big Fish, the progression to OWD is straightforward — the Scuba Diver dives count toward the OWD requirement, so there's no redundant work involved in converting the certification later.
Rescue Diver + EFR
The PADI Rescue Diver combined with Emergency First Response training at Big Fish runs over four days and includes five dives. Minimum age is 16 years, and candidates need an existing Advanced Open Water certification. The 450€ fee covers the full course including EFR certification, all five dives, equipment, van transfers, and study materials in English, German, Spanish, or Polish. The EFR component covers CPR and first aid on land before moving to in-water rescue scenarios. The four-day structure alternates surface sessions with dives in the ocean around Los Cristianos, using the centre's site rotation to set up realistic problem scenarios in open water rather than a pool. Five dives over four days with active rescue work makes this a more physically and mentally demanding stretch than the AOWD course. At Big Fish, small group sizes mean candidates get detailed feedback on rescue techniques after each scenario rather than spending sessions waiting their turn. The instructors running Rescue courses — Greg, whose ex-military background shapes how he approaches safety and procedure, and others on the team — bring different styles of rigour to the training. Candidates who are methodical about skills progression find the four-day format works well here. Rescue Diver is a prerequisite for Divemaster at PADI, so candidates at Big Fish who have the professional track in mind often move directly from this course into the two-month Divemaster programme. The practical, scenario-driven structure of the four days makes it the course that most changes how divers perceive what's happening around them underwater — awareness of other divers shifts permanently after working through the rescue scenarios.
