Curso Open Water Diver

The Open Water Diver at Active Diving Würzburg is the standard SSI and i.a.c. entry-level certification, delivered without a fixed weekly timetable. Students schedule theory sessions and pool training to fit their own availability — the course typically spans around four weeks, but can be stretched or compressed depending on how much time you have. Theory takes place in the school's classroom in the Lengfeld district of Würzburg. Pool training runs from May to September in outdoor pools and from October to April in indoor facilities, so the course is available year-round regardless of weather. All rental equipment is included in the course fee. The school uses Seaquest Pro QD BCDs and Apeks and Scubapro regulators for training, with wetsuits from 5 mm to 7 mm. If you need to repeat a skill or a theory module, there's no extra charge — the school works until you're confident, not until the scheduled hours are used up. Once certified, graduates receive preferential rates on rental equipment and dive events run by the school — a practical incentive to keep diving through the local lake events that Active Diving organises throughout the year.

Schnuppertauchen

The taster session at Active Diving Würzburg takes place in a pool — indoors or outdoors depending on the season — on Saturday mornings from 09:00 to 12:00. You book a slot by appointment, so there's no fixed group date to fit around. The session starts with a briefing on the equipment and the basic breathing and safety procedures you'll use in the water. From there you get in the pool under direct supervision of one of the school's instructors. No prior experience is needed. The minimum age is 10 years. All required forms — health declaration, registration — are sent to you by email after you get in touch. The school provides all equipment; you bring yourself. At €39, the taster fee is fully credited toward an Open Water Diver course if you decide to continue. The school also issues the session as a gift voucher, which makes it a straightforward present for someone curious about diving.

Advanced OWD

The Advanced Open Water Diver at Active Diving Würzburg follows the same flexible scheduling model as the entry-level course — no fixed dates, sessions booked by agreement with the school. The course builds directly on Open Water skills and is run in line with SSI and i.a.c. standards. Active Diving organises regular dive events at lakes across Germany, Austria and Switzerland, which provide practical open-water environments where students can work toward their advanced certification outside of a holiday trip. Sites like the Sundhäuser See and Deglersee, which appear on the school's event calendar, are the kind of locations where this training takes place. The school's team includes a full Instructor Trainer and multiple Open Water and Specialty Instructors, meaning the depth of expertise available for the advanced curriculum is well above what a smaller operation can offer. As with all courses, equipment is available for rental at the school's published rates, with course participants receiving included rental kit during training dives.

Rescue Diver

The Rescue Diver course at Active Diving Würzburg is taught by instructors who hold EFR (Emergency First Response) and Advanced First Aid qualifications — Salome, Christian, Thorsten and Christina all carry these ratings. That means the emergency response component of the course is delivered by people who teach first aid as a separate discipline, not just as a bolt-on to their dive instructor training. The course follows SSI and i.a.c. standards and is structured with the same flexible scheduling that applies to all Active Diving programmes. Theory, pool sessions and open-water rescue scenarios are arranged by appointment rather than in fixed weekly blocks. Active Diving operates with a stated accident-free record since 1999, and the Rescue Diver course sits at the centre of how the school approaches safety training: the skills here are considered part of what makes any diver more reliable underwater, not just a stepping stone to Divemaster. Students must hold Advanced Open Water Diver certification before enrolling. A valid health declaration or medical certificate is required, as with all courses at the school.

Divemaster

The Divemaster programme at Active Diving Würzburg is the first professional-level certification in the SSI and i.a.c. pathway. The school has certified Dive Leader Pros on staff — Johanna, Oliver (listed as Scuba Instructor), Samuel (who also holds a DAN Instructor rating), Sabine, and Niklas — which gives candidates a working model of what the qualification looks like in practice within a busy school environment. Training takes place across the school's regular operations: assisting with courses, supervising student pool sessions, and participating in the dive events the school runs at lakes in Germany and neighbouring countries. This provides genuine working exposure rather than a purely academic pathway. The Instructor Trainer on staff — Christian — means the school has the capacity to take candidates further up the professional ladder if they decide to pursue a full instructor rating after completing Divemaster. Scheduling follows the same flexible model as all Active Diving courses. Candidates should expect a longer timeline than recreational courses given the practical hours required by the certification standards.

Frequently asked

What people ask before booking

The minimum age is 10 years for both the Discover Scuba taster session and full beginner courses. Minors require a signed consent form from a parent or guardian before participating.

You fill in a health declaration form. If all answers are no, no doctor's certificate is required. If you answer yes to any question — or if you're under 18 or have a pre-existing condition — a dive medical is needed. The school recommends Dr. Frederic Kluge in Bergtheim (Tel. 09367-3990) for the examination.

Active Diving offers a money-back guarantee on all courses. If you drop out partway through, you receive a pro-rata refund of the unused portion. If you don't start at all, you get a full refund. No cancellation fees apply.

Yes — the complete rental kit is included in all course fees. Outside of courses, individual items are available to rent separately: a full kit costs €25 per day, €39 per weekend, or €99 for a week.

The school certifies through both i.a.c. and SSI. Both organisations are internationally recognised, and your certification will be accepted at dive centres worldwide.

Yes. Two instructors on the team — Thorsten and Christina — hold Handicap Instructor qualifications, making Active Diving one of the few schools in the area equipped to teach adapted diving.

Training runs all year. Pool sessions take place in outdoor pools from May to September and in indoor pools from October to April. There are no seasonal gaps in the schedule.

The school runs regular day trips and weekends to lakes across Germany, Austria and Switzerland — sites like the Sundhäuser See, Deglersee, and Fernsteinsee feature regularly. Indoor dive sessions at Dive4Life Siegburg appear on the calendar in winter. In 2025 the school also ran a week-long trip to Zakynthos, Greece.
